A lush green tea village on the mountain slopes of the Himalaya in Darjeeling at 5500 ft above sea level, known as Mandal Gaon. Like any other small tea grower in Darjeeling Mr Moktan also used to sell green leaves to the nearby tea factory but he hardly had any control over the price. With the liberalisation of the tea plantation laws in Darjeeling, Moktan also took to tea plantation organically. Tea being a cash crop he soon transformed his farmland for the cultivation of Potato, corn and other vegetables into a tea garden in 1998. His plantation consists of more than 8000 tea bushes and he used to make a living by selling green tea leaves to the big factories and some other vegetable products from his farms. Moktan never used chemical even in his vegetable farm as he never felt the need to shift from the traditional farming methods. We have been putting up a lot of effort to encourage and motivate the small organic tea growers in Darjeeling to setup traditional micro tea processing plant to produce specialty teas and Mr Moktan is one out of them to take up the challenge. He constructed a small handcrafted micro tea factory last year (Nov 2016) to process teas from his own organically grown tea farm and has successfully produced some fine artisanal teas. However he is not in a position to afford the organic certification for his garden but still continues to adopt the traditional ways of farming. He also gets a lot of support and assistance from his son, daughter, wife and four permanent factory workers. We look to create some of the most amazing tea in the years to come.
